Finds from the Erdställe

The amount of objects dating to the construction period found in Erdställe is quite limited. In fact, the Erdställe in general are considered poor in finds, but the backfill of sealed off shafts, passages, and chambers often contains artefacts, especially fragmented pottery. The finds do not permit any conclusions regarding a particular form of use of the Erdställe, however. Much appears as waste that came into the tunnels only with the backfill.

What kinds of items were found in the Erdställe?

Pottery shards and – very rarely – intact pottery vessels, animal bones, charcoal and ash, weaving loom weights, lamps, coins, knives, arrowheads, nails, spearheads, spits, axes, slag, hoes, firing pins, small bells, rings, swords, picks, scythes and sickles, forks, ploughshares, millstones and querns, whetstones, flints, eggshells …

In the showcases:

Medieval and early modern finds from Erdställe in the vicinity of Neukirchen-Balbini: Pottery, stove tiles, knives, a nail, an axe and a tool.
